WHY
A leading mining group sought to strengthen
its apprenticeship pipeline to sustain growth and safety. Leadership needed artisans who met exacting standards and contributed
value sooner.
The challenge was to modernise a narrow, legacy curriculum so apprentices mastered core trades alongside digital and mechanised practices shaping operations. Success meant faster competence, safer work, and a workforce ready for autonomous equipment, data-driven maintenance, and emerging technologies.
HOW
VSLS co-designed the skills centre curriculum following a diagnostic of roles, risks, and workflows. Principles: safety first, job realism, future-fit capability. VSLS mapped the operating model to competencies across plan, do, review and data-enabled maintenance.
Content moved from narrow tasks to an integrated progression: scenarios, coached practice and feedback. Governance paired external quality assurance with internal ownership to enable iteration. Delivery
blended classroom, site and e-learning for
real-world transfer.
WHAT
VSLS delivered a competency-based curriculum with staged pathways, realistic scenarios, and coached practice. Assessor guides and manager prompts set consistent standards. Blended delivery across classroom, site and e-learning made capability repeatable at scale and aligned to operations.
Impact included higher assessment pass rates, earlier job readiness, safer task execution, and clearer progression for apprentices. Supervisors reported stronger planning and work management. Governance now tracks outcomes and keeps the curriculum current.
